Jefferson’s Bible

I’ll take the parts that you don’t want,

Mystery and magic,

Faith and hope.

I’ll take the parts,

Hard to believe

Without his spirit.

.

Give me the lover’s kiss,

Power of the universe,

Wrapped in a touch.

Give me the voice,

That calms an angry ocean,

That brings peace.

.

I’ll take the promise never broken,

Placed, unmoved,

Granted without reason.

I need the hands that bleed,

The beaten brow,

The pain,

To trust I’ll rise again.
